Europe is in crisis. It has probably always been so. Europe was only able to form an organic and peaceful community in the second half of the 20th century, with the creation of the EU. Yet the EU has not resolved a deeper crisis that is cultural in nature. There is an ancient - slightly recognized and poorly analyzed – split. This corresponds to the divide between the Protestant North and the Catholic South.
It may be that the Reformation through Christian doctrine and in the organization of Church and State has just confirmed a much older opposition than the one seen by Max Weber. The sources of this conflict must be identified in order to better understand the Reformation. The symptoms can still be seen in Europe today in areas such as ethical values, family, the rule of law, management styles, modes of governance and global political visions.
Renowned professor Marcel Hénaff from the University of California, San Diego explores the topic in conversation with former Danish ambassador and current senior analyst Lars Vissing from the Danish Institute of International Studies.
